Reversing the Effects of Gum Disease with Periodontal Therapy
At Aesthetic and General Dentistry, we take gum disease very seriously. Why? Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss, can contribute to further health complications including heart attack and stroke, and diminishes the health and beauty of your smile. We offer periodontal therapy (“periodontal” is how dentists refer to your gums) to help you combat gum disease and avoid these problems.
You may have gum disease if your gums bleed easily, your gums are tender or swollen, or you have a chronic bad taste in your mouth with no explanation. Don’t have these symptoms? You should still come in for a general dentistry checkup every six months, during which we can check for the early signs of gum disease. Some people with gum disease have no symptoms at all!
Once we’ve discovered your gum disease, we will perform periodontal therapy. This generally involves scaling and root planing, a serious deep cleaning of the gum pockets around the base of your teeth. After periodontal therapy, you must maintain stringent oral health routines and visit our dental office regularly to keep the gum disease from coming back. We want you to keep your teeth for a lifetime, and we use periodontal therapy to help make this dream a reality.
